The Creative Power of Words

Our words are the most powerful force in our lives. In them is the power to bless, to heal, to prosper, to overcome, or in them is the power to curse, to make sick, to impoverish, or to defeat. What many people don’t realize is that just as God has set in motion laws that govern the physical world we live in, He has also set into motion spiritual laws that govern the spiritual world.
We thrive when we learn to cooperate with the physical laws of God. When we disregard them, we suffer for it. The law of gravity and the laws that control the movement of matter we have learned to harness to bring great blessing to our modern world. We travel in what our ancestors would call supernatural ways, as we traverse the globe in a few hours in what would have taken them many weeks.
The creative power of words is one of the most important laws that govern the spiritual realm. Words are a powerful force! They are carriers of either faith or unbelief. As the above verse indicates, they have the power to produce life or death. If we want to receive the best that God has for us in this life and in the life to come, we must learn to use our words wisely.
Many people have the wrong idea that God controls everything in our lives, good or bad. But that is simply not true! When I was a child, I watched Superman on T.V. and decided that I could fly with a cape tied around my neck just like Superman did. I tied a small sheet around my neck, climbed up on top of my dad’s workshop in the back yard, and jumped off! I learned quickly that a sheet tied around my neck would not overcome the effects of gravity, and I paid for it with considerable pain! God didn’t cause my pain; my stupidity did! He set a natural law into motion, and I violated it!
In the spiritual realm, the laws of faith and confession have been established by our loving Father as He wisely governs the universe He created. He has destined us for blessing, and He longs for us to cooperate with Him, so that we can receive His best. If we don’t cooperate, through ignorance (Hosea 4:6), or because of ingrained unbelief over years of wrong teaching, we’ll be open prey for the enemy to come in to steal, kill and destroy in our lives. These things don’t come because God desires them for us, NEVER. He longs to bless. (See James 1:17) They come as a result of broken spiritual law! Many of God’s wonderful people, whom He loves dearly, suffer because they ignorantly break these spiritual laws of faith and confession. And God can’t help them until they stop breaking the law! Be careful with what you believe and what you allow to come out of your mouth!
We can begin to cooperate with God and his laws in the spiritual world by being born again, confessing Jesus’ Lordship, and by living by faith in and obedience to His word and expecting for Him to provide for us in this life. The law of the spiritual world is “…as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” (Matt 8:13)
Our words reveal what we believe, and our words determine the degree of blessing we receive from the Lord, spiritually and in this physical world! This is a spiritual law few realize. Notice what Jesus said in Matthew 12:36-37, “But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” The Message paraphrase reads, “Let me tell you something: Every one of these careless words is going to come back to haunt you. There will be a time of Reckoning. Words are powerful; take them seriously. Words can be your salvation. Words can also be your damnation.” If words determine our final destiny, heaven or hell, do you think they are any less powerful right now? They also control what we receive now in this life.
The book of James reveals that words are to human life what a rudder is to a ship, and what a bit is in the mouth of a horse. (See James 3: 2-6) The huge ship in the ocean is governed by the small rudder under the guiding hand of the captain. The muscular body of a horse can be controlled by a simple pull on the reins that affects the small bit in the horses’ mouth. And James says that in a similar way, the small tongue governs our lives.
In fact, from cradle to grave, our lives are controlled by our words! James 3:6 reads, “And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.” The phrase course of nature could be correctly translated wheel of existence, speaking of the whole of a person’s life from the time they are born until they die. So notice that this verse says that words produce the direction of a person’s life.
In the spiritual world, words are carriers of faith. And a spiritual law according to Jesus is that we receive in life what we really believe. (See Matthew 8:13; Matthew 9:29; Mark 5:25-34; Mark 10:52; Matthew 15:28; Mark 9:23.) And what we need to remember is that the spiritual world is constantly influencing the physical world around us! Hebrews 11:3 reads, “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.” God said, “Let there be…” and all we see came into existence.
God expects us as His children to use our words with great care and call those things that do not exist as though they did. (Romans 4:17) Speak words of faith instead of doubt, fear, and unbelief. Jesus said we could speak to a mountain, and if we really believed in our words, it would be removed and thrown into the sea! He said we would have what we say. (Mark 11:23)
The greatest mistake we can make with our words is to only voice what we see and feel around us, allowing our circumstances to determine what we say. When we do this, we limit God’s blessings, and allow the enemy to come in and bring us harm.
Never talk doubt, unbelief, failure, defeat, fear, poverty, lack, need, sickness, dread, death or destruction. Fill your mouth with faith, confidence, love, expectancy, joy, belief, prosperity, blessing, healing, favor, success, abundance, and godliness. You’ll reap now in this life whatever you sow with your words. God says you will.
The Father has placed before you life or death, blessing or cursing. (Deuteronomy 30:15-19) Choose LIFE today with your words. You’ll have eternity to reap the rewards! Remember, God’s creative power is in your words!
